Meihua Mountain is located at the southern edge of the Zhongshan Scenic Area in Nanjing, named for its vast area and numerous plum blossoms at the summit. Meihua Mountain is part of the Ming Xiaoling Scenic Area, close to the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, and features historical sites such as the tomb of Sun Quan and the Guanmei Pavilion for visitors to pay respects and admire.
The variety of plum blossoms on Meihua Mountain is rich, with a tradition of planting plums spanning over a thousand years. Presently, there are more than 30,000 plum trees on the mountain. From early March to mid-March, which varies slightly each year, is the blooming season for plum blossoms in Nanjing. Plum blossoms of various colors and varieties, such as white, pink, and red, cover the entire mountain, creating a sea of flowers that are a sight to behold from both afar and up close, attracting many photography enthusiasts who linger for a whole day.
Among the more than 300 types of plum blossoms discovered and cultivated worldwide, over 200 can be found here, including many precious species that are treasures among plums. A particularly valuable variety called ‘Bie Jiao Wan Shui’ has a strong fragrance and bright petals with up to 45 petals, considered the ‘Treasure of Meihua Mountain.’ Those who wish to see it can search for it.
The Guanmei Pavilion, located on the southern side of Meihua Mountain, is the tomb of Sun Quan. There is a stone statue of Sun Quan and a stele recording the tomb, which visitors can go to see. The pavilion at the top of the mountain, originally the tomb of Wang Jingwei, was destroyed and later rebuilt as a pavilion called ‘Fanghe Pavilion.’ Its high vantage point makes it an ideal spot for viewing plum blossoms, hence it is now known as ‘Guanmei Pavilion.’
Adjacent to the Guanmei Pavilion, on the eastern side, is the ‘Jiangsu-Fukuoka Friendship Cherry Blossom Garden,’ which features eight varieties and over 4,000 cherry blossom trees, also covering a large area. After the early spring plum blossom season, from late March to early April (slightly varying each year), cherry blossoms bloom, continuing to cover the mountain in pink, maintaining the charm of Meihua Mountain.
